If you’re trying to get out of your current position but struggling to find an offer that you’re willing to accept, then it’s time to re-strategize. You obviously aren’t having any problems being offered a job, which is great! But when it comes to finding the right job, you’re struggling.
Every job has its pros and cons. Some will pay more than others, while others will offer a more competitive benefits package. Still, others will be closer to your home. The first thing you need to do in order to more successfully move forward is to name the single most important characteristic of your new job. For example, perhaps your next position is an investment that you’d like to take for the sake of gaining experience that will help you get higher positions further down the road. Unless you clearly acknowledge that you’re looking for a position for the sake of experience, it will be incredibly easy to become sidetracked by details such as the slightly lower salary or the slightly longer commute. Instead, stay focused on your main objective!
After you’ve clearly identified this main objective, now take the time to identify if there are any “musts” for your next position. For example, perhaps you’ve decided that you are not willing to travel more than 20 minutes to work or that you need to be making at least so many dollars an hour. Make a list of all of these requirements, and obviously only apply to positions that meet these requirements.
If you can accomplish these two things in your application process–apply for jobs that further your main objective and meet your personal prerequisites–you’ll be well on your way to finding a job that’s a great match for what you’re looking for. Although it will take more brainstorming on your part before you start applying, you’ll save yourself from countless interviews for positions that you wouldn’t want to take.
