It is a widespread misconception that in order to be happy we need to do what we love. No, we really, really don\u2019t. This may seem counterintuitive, but when you think about it, it actually makes a lot of sense. Doing what we love for the sake of doing it is empowering, it drives our passions, and it makes us happy. Doing what we love to sustain a living can be draining; it can actually completely change how we feel towards said activity. What we need to focus on in order to be successful and happy at work, is what makes us what we are.<\/p>\n

Sounds lofty and confusing, I know, but let me clarify. We are personalities and abilities. That is what we are as people. Now our work should be focused on our abilities, with a dash of personality thrown in the mix.<\/p>\n

What are you truly good at? What are your strengths and how do those coincide with activities that keep you engaged? These are the questions you need to ask yourself when looking for a career path, not what you love. You can love tigers, cooking and fantasy football, but that should not determine what it is that you do.<\/p>\n

Once you\u2019ve figured out what is the best fit for you, you\u2019ve got to showcase who you are to employers. You can do this via the traditional method, submit an application and a text resume, or you can go above and beyond to set yourself apart. To highlight the abilities you can\u2019t list on paper (aka your soft skills<\/a>) create a video resume.
